Star Trekkin'!
With the first images of the new Star Trek cast released, no one has yet asked if the arguably the greatest piece of the original Star Trek will be showing up in the new movie.

Watching The Watchmen
First off, let me get this out of the way. I think Watchmen is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great book, and I can see why people rate it as such an iconic and important piece of work, but, for me personally... Sorry, but it doesn't work on the same levels as some of Alan Moore's other works. I first read Watchmen and V For Vendetta around the same time, and I found V to be a far more haunting and affecting story (so much so that I've never, to this day, actually read the copy I bought - every time I think about picking it up, I remember the scenes with the imprisoned Evey and I just can't).Having re-read Watchmen again in the wake of the movie apparently coming out, it struck me as how easy it actually would be to film.
Yes, you read that right: easy to put on film.
The visuals have a very cinematic feel to them right the way through the story, which would transfer brilliantly to celluoid. The themes explored and the tone of it would make for a very adult themed film, which, with the right cast and the right director, could work magnificently.
The problem is the ending. It's so downbeat and and morose that no one would do it, because, hey, Hollywood likes a happy ending. That's what's stopped the film from ever becoming a reality. So, of course, the Watchmen movie has a different ending. Obviously, don't click that link if you don't want to know.
So, why are people upset about it? Director Snyder, and some of the cast, have said that the ending is 'in the spirit of the original book.' Which is not the same as 'the same ending', no matter how much you want it to be. Will the 'new' ending work? Will it make sense? Considering how much money this movie is going to make Warner Brothers, do they care?
I always liked the ending of the book (even though it's pretty much the major plot point of 2000AD's Nemesis The Warlock). It was a strangely jarring scene that made perfect sense in its absurdity. The 'new' ending sounds like it'll work, and draw a neat conclusion to what is essentially a character driven story (although how much of the characterisation remains in the movie, we'll have to see - let's not forget that Snyder was also the writer and director behind the recent (and, in my opinion, lacklustre) Dawn Of The Dead remake, which did away with strong characterisation of the original).
But, as I said earlier, considering how much money Warner Brothers are going to rake in off the back of this movie, does it really matter? In fact, how long will it be before we see the inevitable sequel? The cartoon series? The spin-offs?
Becasue, you know it's going to happen...
