"And One Shall Die!!" - Random thoughts on the upcoming "death" in The Fantastic Four
So, one of the Fantastic Four is going to die. Apparently.
Only... I don't think it's what everyone's expecting, which I think goes without saying, really. In fact, I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that current FF writer Jonathan Hickman has already told us who it is in an earlier issue - issue 580, to be exact.
One of the concepts that Hickman's introduced into the series is a think tank consisting of some of the brightest and amazing young minds in the Marvel universe, The Future Foundation, including his daughter, Valeria. Their first project is...
Yeah, they've figured out a way to temporarily "cure" The Thing.
You see where I'm going with this, right? It's only a tiny step to assume that something happens, say The Thing gets a dose of weird radiation...
So once, he takes the magic cure, he turns back into Ben Grimm permanently and presto! One of the Fantastic Four is no more.
Of course, I'm probably wrong about this, and I don't mind admitting that I am; I mean there's bound to be someone out there on the Internet being wrong as you read this. It might actually be me. Or it might not. We'll find out on Wednesday. Or whenever you manage to get to your local comic shop. Either way, it just seems the most obvious story route, considering what Hickman's laid down.
So far throughout the whole 3 story arc, he's lined each member up as a potential target for "death", but, interestingly, it's only with this story arc that he's really done anything with Ben Grimm, and made you really care about him. As I pointed out, it's something Alan Moore's done with Neonomicon, but in a more cynical way. Or maybe Hickman's the one being cynical. I don't know. All I know is that I've enjoyed Hickman's Fantastic Four for the most part; it feels like the comic is going somewhere for a change, and I'm curious as to where that is.
Whatever happens, though, I guess it'll mean a lot of money for Marvel...
